So THIS is what was in our chicken coop this morning. Some people will see this and shriek. Some will say “It is a rat snake. Pity you killed it, it eats mice.” Others will say, “Good that thing was beautiful! Shame on you, you monster!” Interestingly, I agree with you all. It had to go; it was eating our eggs, and sooner or later, it would kill a chicken. I have seen it before. Our little bantams are just the right size for a snake to think “MAYBE I can eat it!” Trust me on this, I once pulled a live snake off a bantam it was trying to kill. (The bird was fine, though it probably needed a therapist.)
Anyway! This guy was at least 4 feet long. He was in the coop when my son Cameron went in looking for eggs, and Cameron came screaming out of there like a … Well, like an elementary school kid with a destiny in theater having found a snake. Do my husband and I dispatched the snake and buried it. It was really am impressive creature, beautiful colors I was sorry to kill it. If it had been under the shed eating mice, I might have left it, but it had an egg in its gut and was going after another. No dice, buddy!
Good-bye, terrifying and beautiful monster. No eggs for you.
